Cybersecurity in the Supply Chain: A Critical Risk Area

"Weaknesses in suppliers’ cyber security and data protection can directly compromise even organisations with strong internal protections."

|

Recent breaches at M&S, Co-op and Jaguar Land Rover have brought supply chain security into the spotlight. These incidents highlight the growing threat posed by vulnerabilities in third-party suppliers. We’ve been working closely with clients to assess risks in their supply chains, particularly around data processing activities, and advising on the aftermath of data breaches involving key suppliers. Weaknesses in suppliers’ cyber security and data protection can directly compromise even organisations with strong internal cyber protections.

Businesses that regularly handle personal data are particularly exposed, but the risk extends across sectors from retail to manufacturing. Larger organisations face added complexity due to extensive supply chains, while smaller organisations are equally at risk, often relying on smaller suppliers who may lack robust security systems.

We continue to raise awareness among our clients and support them in implementing stronger due diligence, contractual safeguards and ongoing risk management to mitigate these evolving threats.
